  • Swap high fat dairy foods such as milk and cheese, for low fat versions. And cut-out butter, mayonnaise, creamy sauces and rich dressing - a little olive oil is a simple and less fattening alternative.
  • Cut down on sugar and sugary foods like confectionary, biscuits and cakes. And cut down on salt, too. Excess salt is linked to high blood pressure and heart disease. To add flavour use more herbs and spices.

  • Make water a priority. Aim to drink between 1.5 - 2 litres of water a day, particularly outside meal times. Kick start your day with a glass of water first thing, and finish the day with a glass before bedtime. To increase water's natural cleansing properties, add a teaspoon of cider vinegar or lemon juice.

Finally, here's some advice on how to get even more out of your mealtimes - eat slowly. Savour your food, chew it well, enjoy the experience of eating good, simple, delicious food at a pace that allows you to fully appreciate the experience. It takes around 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain that it's full. When you rush meals that important message doesn't reach the brain until you've already overeaten.

Having an active lifestyle can improve your overall health and prevent diseases.
